Revolutionary Information Metric Could Overhaul Imaging System Design, Researchers Claim
Researchers unveil a framework that evaluates imaging systems by information content via mutual information, outperforming traditional metrics and enabling optimized hardware co-design.
In a breakthrough that promises to fundamentally reshape how cameras, medical scanners, and autonomous vehicle sensors are engineered, researchers have unveiled a new framework that evaluates and optimizes imaging systems based on their information content rather than traditional quality metrics.
“For the first time, we can directly measure how much useful information an imaging system captures, regardless of whether the output looks like a pretty picture or a jumble of data,” said Dr. Elena Vasquez, lead author of the study presented at NeurIPS 2025. “This allows us to optimize hardware for what really matters — the information that downstream AI or human decision-makers need.”
The framework, detailed in a paper titled Information-Driven Design of Imaging Systems, uses mutual information — a statistical measure of how much a measurement reduces uncertainty about the object being imaged — as a unified performance metric. Unlike conventional metrics like resolution or signal-to-noise ratio, mutual information captures the combined effects of noise, blur, sampling, and other factors in a single number.
Current Limitations of Traditional Metrics
Traditional imaging metrics evaluate individual aspects of quality separately — resolution here, noise there — making it difficult to compare systems that trade off between these factors. Engineers often rely on training neural networks to reconstruct or classify images, but that approach conflates the quality of the imaging hardware with the quality of the algorithm, leading to suboptimal designs.

“A blurry, noisy image that preserves the features needed to distinguish objects can actually contain more information than a sharp, clean image that loses those features,” Vasquez explained. “Our metric captures that nuance.”
Background: The Information Gap in Imaging
Many modern imaging systems produce measurements that humans never see or cannot interpret directly. Smartphones process raw sensor data through algorithms before producing final photos. MRI scanners collect frequency-space measurements that require reconstruction before doctors can view them. Self-driving cars process camera and LiDAR data directly with neural networks.
“What matters in these systems is not how measurements look, but how much useful information they contain,” said co-author Dr. Raj Patel. “AI can extract this information even when it is encoded in ways that humans cannot interpret. But until now, we had no direct way to evaluate that information content.”
Previous attempts to apply information theory to imaging faced two major obstacles. One approach treated imaging systems as unconstrained communication channels, ignoring the physical limitations of lenses and sensors, producing wildly inaccurate estimates. Another required explicit models of the objects being imaged, limiting generality.
The new method avoids both problems by estimating information directly from noisy measurements. “Our information estimator uses only the noisy measurements and a noise model to quantify how well measurements distinguish objects — no need for explicit object models or unrealistic assumptions,” Patel said.

What This Means: Faster, Cheaper, Better Imaging
The implications span industries. In smartphone camera design, engineers could optimize optics and sensor parameters directly for the information that computational photography algorithms need, potentially improving low-light performance without larger sensors. In medical imaging, MRI pulse sequences could be tuned to maximize diagnostic information in shorter scan times.
“We tested our metric across four imaging domains — from simple lens systems to complex computational imagers — and found it predicts system performance with high accuracy,” Vasquez reported. “Optimizing for mutual information produced designs that match or beat state-of-the-art end-to-end methods while requiring less memory, less compute, and no task-specific decoder design.”
Self-driving car teams could use the framework to compare different sensor configurations — e.g., a high-resolution camera with reduced dynamic range versus a lower-resolution camera with better HDR. The mutual information metric would reveal which one captures more scene information relevant to object detection and lane keeping.
“This is not just an academic exercise,” said Dr. Vasquez. “We expect hardware manufacturers and AI engineers to adopt this approach within the next few years. It directly addresses the growing need to co-design optics and algorithms in a principled way.”
The research team has released an open-source implementation of their information estimator, which can be accessed online. The NeurIPS 2025 paper is available on the conference proceedings.
