Internship Overview

The internship runs from 13 to 31 July, with standard office hours of 9 am to 5 pm (Monday to Friday, including a one-hour lunch break). Interns are paid the London Living Wage (currently £14.80 per hour) and receive an additional £100 travel bursary to help with commuting costs. The role follows a hybrid format: part of the time is spent in person at the office near London Bridge station in central London, with the remainder working remotely.

You will report to Associate Editor Daisy Dunne and be fully integrated into the editorial team for the duration of the placement.

What You Will Do

• Research, write, and publish an original article for Carbon Brief under editorial guidance.
• Promote your article using visuals and social media channels, learning how to tailor content for different platforms.
• Assist with research and writing for Carbon Brief’s award-winning daily and weekly newsletters.
• Help find stories in scientific papers and policy documents, contributing to the team’s coverage of the latest climate developments.
• Participate in social media content creation and discussion, including drafting posts and analyzing engagement.

Throughout the internship, you will shadow staff members across different roles—from journalists covering climate science and China’s emissions, to specialists in visuals and social media. This gives you a broad understanding of how a small, independent global journalism team operates.

• Step-by-step insight into how Carbon Brief produces its articles, including fact-checking, data verification, and visual storytelling.

• Practical knowledge of using visuals effectively in journalism—whether infographics, charts, or videos.

Skills and Qualifications

To be considered for this internship, you should demonstrate:

• A strong interest in climate change and a desire to communicate about it to general audiences.
• Some writing experience on a technical topic for non-specialist readers (this can include self-publishing on a blog or student media).
• Genuine interest in journalism and a commitment to journalistic integrity.
• Competency with word processing and spreadsheet software, such as MS Word/Excel or Google Docs/Sheets.
• Excellent spoken and written English.
• Experience with social media platforms such as Twitter/X and Instagram is considered an advantage.
